Glutathione is a tripeptide of glutamate, cysteine and glycine, and the most abundant intracellular low-molecular-weight thiol in mammalian tissue. Its free sulfhydryl group is the functional centre of the molecule, cycling between reduced (GSH) and oxidised (GSSG) states to buffer intracellular redox potential. The GSH/GSSG ratio is widely used in laboratory work as a quantitative index of cellular oxidative state.
